Overcommitment

I am the queen of overcommiting.  I have a hard time saying no.  I don’t like to disappoint, I want Sophia to have opportunities and fun and I like to be social = bad combination.  I’d like to say, “I can’t help it, I have a lot of family and friends!”  But, (a) that’s a cop-out, (b) it’s heavy on the ego [...]

I am thankful for…

While it’s true that Thanksgiving is about overindulging in food, it’s also about, well, being thankful.  So, here’s a list of a few things I’m thankful for, in no particular order.

Hearing a sweet little voice say, “I wuv you mommy” everyday.

The privilege of being a mother, a sister, a daughter, a best friend.

Inside jokes with my sister.

The [...]

Two years ago today

The inevitable reminiscent post.  I can’t help it.
Two years ago today I first held in my arms a tiny little baby — just over 6 lbs., a head full of dark hair, soft mocha-colored skin, tiny, pristine fingers and sleepy eyes.  She was a quiet, calm little thing and holding her warmed me all over, calming [...]

You brighten up for me all of my days…

Sometimes Sophia and I scream really loudly together, me in falsetto, her in her “I’m proud to be a girl” voice.  We scream until we giggle.  Then we catch our breath, scream some more and giggle even louder.  And this continues until we’re full-on laughing and out of breath.

How sweet it is to be loved [...]

Approaching the big 0-2 and everything that goes with it

Sophia’s 2nd birthday is just a few weeks away.  Of course, I’m excited for her special day —  I just finished her Princess Tiana-themed invitations and love the fact that she replies “TWO!!” with excitement and gusto when asked how old she’s going to be on her birthday.
But, simultaneous to the planning are my ongoing thoughts [...]

My temporary stint as a stay-at-home-mom

I never thought I’d want to be a full-time stay-at-home mom.  I’m still not sure I would, but I’ve been blessed with some surprise at-home time these past few days and it’s been incredible.  Absolutely incredible!  And it’s making me wish even more for at least a part-time stay-at-home-mom gig, although I realize the short-term nature [...]

Lessons from my daughter

Parenting brings with it many lessons.  Here’s an important one:

Stop and smell the roses, or in this case, the marigolds and impatiens.

My extraordinary child

I adore my child.  Simple as that.  Here’s what the lil’ mama has been up to lately.  Sophia is approaching 21 months old…two is just around the corner!  She’s all legs and hair.  (Seriously, she’s lookin’ extra tall these days and her hair has grown a ton!)  She’s a smiley, happy kid for the most [...]

Eithiopian cooking, adult adoptees and the Colorado Rapids (Heritage Camp, Day 2)

Another awe-inspiring day at Heritage Camp.  Have I mentioned that the camp is parent-run?  That means that the parents do everything for this camp, including coordination, scheduling, planning, etc.  It’s a big effort and things have gone very well.  As a newbie it was easy to just stand and gawk…I basically showed up for my [...]

Everything from hair care to racism and then some (Heritage Camp, Day 1)

What a day we’ve had.  It’s impossible to summarize it, but I’m going to try for posterity.   Sophia is snoozing and I probably would be, too, if my head wasn’t spinning and if I’d accepted the glass of wine offered to me earlier.  I’m still soaking in all that I’m hearing and seeing from my [...]
